授業の目的
/Class Purpose
As this syllabus shows, the class will be carried out both in Japanese and English, aiming to help students develop good and proper academic writing skills. In accordance with the DP1 of the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, the acquisition of these skills and knowledge will help students contribute to society with a rich cultural knowledge from a broad education.

/Class Objectives
1. Students are expected to understand the basic structure of a paragraph in English.
2. They can tell the difference of style between the academic writing and other prose forms.
3. Students should write a short academic papers both in English.

授業の進め方
/Method of Instruction
Students are required to write short papers almost every two weeks mostly in English. Most of the materials used in class are in English, but the instruction and explanations are given in Japanese.

Because this class is a workshop, participation is essential.

Weekly homework assignments will take roughly 1 or 2 hours per week.

Students will be required to write a short paper in English almost every two weeks.

The papers submitted in class will be returned with comments.
Students are graded as follows:
Writing assignments 60%
Participation 20%
In-class exam (oral) 20%
