Basic literacy stressed for acquisition of computer skills

The course of general culture provides you an opportunity to broaden your cultural base while studying current issues or fields in which you have interest. The approach to this unique course, jointly established by Kobe Gakuin's faculties of law, economics and humanities, features a curriculum that enables students to develop their basic learning skills and broaden their cultural base in a wide range of fields. Particularly notable is the wide-ranging content of the Basic Literacy Studies. The classes in this field, English, German, French, Chinese, and Japanese for foreign students are fully on a par with those of an accredited foreign language institute, and its classes in computer knowledge, which include lectures and actual practice sessions, enable the student to acquire highly-developed information processing skills that can be put to use immediately upon graduation.

Quickly acquire skills that will be in increasingly high demand in future society

Taking the general English course as an example, here we offer basic-level Ordinary English and English for Communication classes. When students have moved beyond these there are a variety of upper-level classes to choose from according to their abilities and interests - English for Communication, Language Lab English, Current (Internet) English, Composition, and Reading. Another example is training and guidance in information processing and computer knowledge, which enable students to create documents, calculate tables, browse the Internet, amass data, and exchange email messages in no time after beginning the course.

Freely select courses from a wide range of learning fields

To meet the wide range of students' interests in basic General Studies, the curriculum is structured so that they can freely select from among courses in the fields of cultural science, social science and natural science. The diversified content ranges from the earth's environment to somatology to the world of mathematics, from culture in Japan and other regions of the world, language and expression, thought and psychology to law, government, economics and management in modern society. Students can select from among these areas and work out a study schedule they feel is best for them. All courses are taught by specialists from Kobe Gakuin's faculties.

“Kobe Studies” and other area-study chairs established to enhance employment opportunities

Within the context of lectures provided in the field of Combined General Studies area-study chairs such as “Kobe Studies” and “Akashi Studies” have been set up to provide specialized teaching about specific areas. These feature presentations on local-area problems made by specially-invited area specialists, such as local newspaper reporters and shopping center managers. Credit is also offered for participating in overseas study tours as a means of furthering knowledge of overseas areas. These courses offer a unique opportunity to enhance and improve understanding of other countries through firsthand observation and listening.
